Surgical Gloves

Latex allergy vs. synthetic durability – what’s the verdict?

  • A (Surgeon): I hate synthetic gloves. Nitrile is stiff, and neoprene tears easily. Powdered latex was perfect, but it’s banned due to allergy and wound contamination.

  • B (Infection Control): Double-gloving with indicator undergloves (color change when punctured) should be mandatory for all high-risk surgeries. It catches 95% of occult perforations.

  • C (Procurement): Cost pressure is extreme. A box of premium nitrile is $25 vs. $8 for cheap vinyl. But cheap vinyl offers zero viral protection for bloodborne pathogens.

  • D (OR Nurse): Don’t forget comfort. My hands bleed after 8 hours in ill-fitting nitrile. We need more sizes (half-sizes) and textured fingertips for grip. Safety and ergonomics must align.
